Mary Hunter, middle row fifth from the left, visits NATO Headquarters, Brussels, Belgium, June 22, 2023
Wisconsin’s Mary Hunter, an educator for the Green Lake School District, has just returned from overseas where she learned about the European Union with a large group of her peers from around the country. The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s European Studies selected Mary as the 2023 representative of the K-12 learning community to take part in the Brussels-Lux Study Tour, which is managed with our partner entities at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the University of Pittsburgh. Mary and her peers learned about the European Union – how it is organized, what it does, and how non-EU institutions work. Her trip included visits to European Union institutions and NATO, of primary importance given the war in Ukraine. This program is run by Pittsburgh (https://www.ucis.pitt.edu/esc/outreach/educators/professional-development/brussels, and Wisconsin funds it with U.S. Department of Education National Center funding through its CES (https://europe.wisc.edu/). We look forward to Mary’s report on how her trip will augment her International Baccalaureate Education offerings at Green Lake School District, once she’s recovered from jet lag.
