The reproduction of John Burbow’s sculpture Mildred, located in Marshall Park, will be installed at Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany on September 15th. The dedication ceremony will take place on September 15, 2021 at 10am CDT. The sculpture will honor UW-Madison alumna and World War II resistance fighter, Mildred Fish-Harnack. Fish-Harnack graduated from UW Madison in 1925 and later received her Ph.D at Justus University. During World War II, Fish-Harnack and her husband, Arvid Harnack, provided the United States with vital information regarding Nazi and Soviet economic and military affairs. The sculpture reveal will be broadcasted for guests who cannot attend in person.
In addition to the dedication ceremony on Wednesday October 20th from 4:00- 5:30 pm, author and great-great niece of Fish-Harnack, Rebecca Donner, will be discussing her most recent book, All the Frequent Troubles of our Days, about the life of Mildred Fish-Harnack. The event will be co-sponsored by the Center for German and European Studies and the George L. Mosse Program in History at the UW-Madison Department of History.
