Jean Monnet European Union Center for Excellence Director Professor Nils Ringe Appears in Foreign Policy Article on Populism and Vaccine Skepticism

Jean Monnet European Union Center for Excellence Director Professor Nils Ringe appears in Michele Barbero’s December, 2021 Foreign Policy article, “For Europe’s Far-Right, Vaccine Skepticism Is a Trap.” The article expands on tensions in countries across Europe regarding tighter restrictions on unvaccinated people and how far-right political parties are responding. Far-right parties are gaining more support as governments begin to implement vaccination passports and other constraints. While gaining more support, far-right parties need to find a balance between adhering to pro- and anti-vaccination sentiments within the parties and among constituencies. Professor Ringe offers his expertise on far-right parties and tactics used to gain additional followers beyond the usual ideological confines, as the coronavirus pandemic continues. Professor Ringe and Lucio Rénno are co-editing a new book, Populists and the Pandemic: How Populists Around the World Responded to COVID-19, which is set to be released in 2022.
