Funded by the US Department of Education, the prestigious Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships help undergraduate and graduate students increase their expertise in area studies while developing their language skills. Fellowships are available for intensive language study during the summer and for language and area studies during the academic year. FLAS fellowships cover tuition and provide a stipend for either one academic year or for a summer.
European Studies provides funding to students who intend to study or are currently engaged in the study of the following European languages:
- Arabic (for students with a research focus on Europe)
- Danish
- Dutch (Flemish)
- Finnish (with approval from the Department of Education)
- French (Graduate students in professional schools only)
- Gaelic (Irish, with approval from the Department of Education)
- German (Graduate students in professional schools only)
- Modern Greek (with approval from the Department of Education)
- Icelandic
- Italian
- Norwegian
- Portuguese
- Swedish
- Turkish (for students with a research focus on Europe)
