This symposium will feature presentations from scholars and artists from Sápmi and the Upper Midwest region, as well as several events on and around campus as participants engage with immigration, Indigeneity, and the role of education in local, place-based learning.
We invite you to join us from 11:00am–12:30pm for a panel on art and sustainability featuring Lyz Jaakola (Ojibwe-Finnish musician and enrolled member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe) and Liesl Chatman (woodworker and teacher working in the Nordic American tradition of spoon carving and kolrosing).
From 2:00pm–4:30pm we will be joined by scholars from Sámi allaskuvla, the Sámi Indigenous university. Elisabeth Utsi Gaup, Máret Hætta, and Anne Lindblom will speak on a panel about Sámi allaskuvla and the environment, Indigeneity, and cultural sustainability.
Light refreshments will be served following the afternoon session, but please note that lunch will not be provided.
