Durabilities: Family Planning and the Race Question at the End of Empires

Join us virtually for what promises to be a stimulating conversation on the history of racism, gender, and empire, between two world-class historians, Todd Shepard (Arthur O. Lovejoy Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University) and Jennifer Johnson (Associate Professor of History at Brown University).

Image result for todd shepardProfessor Shepard will engage with the question of affirmative action at the end of empires, investigating the role that social welfare policy played in French efforts to thwart Algerian independence.

 

 

 

 

Image result for jennifer johnson brown unviersityProfessor Johnson will focus in on the history of contraception and family planning, looking in particular at the afterlives of empire in Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria, from the 1960s through the 1980s.
