Co-sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Sol Z. & Gisela Imm Bloomenkranz Fund, the Stiftung Berliner Mauer, and European Studies.
Father’s Sea tells the story of a stroke of fate that affects an entire family, of a father-son relationship that ends abruptly, of moving and staying, of migration and belonging. Deniz Utlu traces the unexpected vicissitudes of life and memory. His novel is a testament to the power of storytelling—which becomes most evident when language is the last thing you have left. At Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer, Deniz Utlu will read as part of the Workshop “Cultures in Motion: Migration, Refuge, Exile” which takes place from May 27 to May 29, 2024. The Workshop is organized by the DAAD-sponsored University of Wisconsin – Madison Center for German and European Studies and additionally supported by the University of Wisconsin – Madison Sol Z. & Gisela Imm Blooomenkranz Fund as well as the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer.
The reading and discussion will be moderated by Professor Sonja Klocke (University of Wisconsin – Madison) and Professor Ela Gezen (University of Massachusetts, Amherst).
The event will take place at the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer, at the Besucherzentrum situated on Bernauer Str. 119, 13355 Berlin.
