This one-day Symposium will explore the gender, racial and class implications of succession law. A legal system’s choices about who is able to transfer wealth during life and at death, and the consequences of these choices, reveal a society’s core values, competing concerns and fundamental political commitments. The transmission of wealth from one generation to the next replicates or disrupts the very social structures that create, sustain and determine power, class, and social mobility. Scholars from around the world will discuss succession law and its implications in today’s society. The Symposium will be a public event and consist of four panels and a keynote speaker during lunch.
